Telephone

Full IDD is available. Country code: 60. Outgoing international code: 00. Public coin-operated phones can be found in many areas, such as supermarkets and post offices. Local calls cost 10 sen minimum. Public card phones can be found throughout the country. Cards can be purchased at airports, petrol stations and some convenient shops for amounts ranging from RM5-50.

 

Mobile telephone

GSM 900 and 1800 networks cover practically the whole country. Network operators include Celcom (www.celcom.com.my ), Maxis (www.maxis.net.my), TM Touch and DIGI (www.didi.com.my). Mobile phone sim-card is widely obtained from the phone shops. Prepaid  or pay as you use/pay as you go are widely use here.

 

Fax

Centres for public use are located in the main post offices of all large towns. Most main hotels also have facilities.

 

Internet/E-mail

ISPs include Jaring (web site: http://www.jaring.net.my), TMnet (web site: http://www.tmnet.my) and Maxis (web site: http://www.maxis.com.my). There are numerous cybercafés. Hotels and hostels often have facilities.

 

Telegram

Telegrams can be sent from any telegraph office, ex; post office.

 

Post

There are post offices in the commercial centre of all towns, open 0800-1630 Monday to Saturday.

 

Press

The English-language dailies printed in peninsular Malaysia are the Asian Wall Street Journal, Business Times, Malay Mail, New Straits Times, The Sun and The Star. There are also several English-language Sunday newspapers and periodicals. English-language newspapers available in Sarawak include the Sarawak Tribune and Borneo Post. The Borneo Bulletin, an English-language daily, is published in Brunei. Chinese and Tamil newspaper also easily get it from paper stand.  There are many printed in other languages and several in two or three languages.

Duty Free Item

The following goods may be imported into Malaysia without incurring customs duty:

200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 225g of tobacco; 1 litre of spirits or wine or malt liquor; 1 bottle of perfume up to the value of M$200; gifts and souvenirs not exceeding a total value of M$200; 100 matches.

 

Controlled and prohibited items

It is prohibited to import any goods from South Africa and Israel. Non-prescribed drugs, weapons, pornography, any cloth bearing the imprint or reproduction of any verses of The Koran, as well as any imprint or reproduction of any currency note or coin, are prohibited. Drug-smuggling carries the death penalty.
